Ed @DomRoman with his weekly blog on FIVE key discussion points on YOUR TEAM!
1 – Aldershot Loss
Let’s not let the controversial decisions mask things too much; Aldershot were much the stronger team on Tuesday and deserved the three points. They were fast, fluid and generally outmanoeuvred us from the kick-off.
I was disappointed by Nicho’s selection. I think making so many changes to the personnel and re-jigging the formation was a gamble, and unfortunately it was a gamble that didn’t pay off. We missed Damon in midfield to break up attacks, Luke was too far back to have an impact (apart from that lovely goal of course) and Klukowski was fairly anonymous again – plus upfront the combination did not work at all.
I was also shocked that Gosling didn’t start – maybe fitness was an issue but he should be a definite starter in every game for me. We also just lacked intensity; certainly compared to April when each and every man stood up to the Shots – it was a pale comparison to that afternoon. We can bemoan the second half decisions for sure, but we’ll have to play much better to win points against quality outfits like Gary Waddock’s team.
2 – Gateshead
Anyway let’s move on shall we! The games come thick and fast, so little time to lick our wounds before a long trip up to the North-East to face Gateshead. Nicho will make changes again I guess, and there’s a good chance he’ll move back to the diamond in midfield – it’s a big shame Jordan is ruled out already (Get well soon Jordan).
I’d definitely reinstate Lathrope, Gosling and Pittman back into the line-up – not sure whether Gowling will be fit (looks unlikely), but he automatically comes back in if possible. The centre back is already looking like our most important player this season, not only with his strong defensive play but also with his leadership of the team.
Meanwhile Luke and Jake have to be allowed to get forward and support the strikers, too often our whole team was too far back on Tuesday and long balls were lumped up aimlessly. That happened frequently last season, and we don’t want a repeat thank you! A better performance would be welcome, and there’s no reason we can’t bring the three points back to Devon.
3 – Strikers
The strike-force was my main concern prior to the season, and it remains my chief concern! What should be Nicho’s starting two, and how should he use them? At the moment it’s far from clear!
Pittman and Keating (Tranmere) looked better than Gray and Keating (Aldershot). Ruairi and James ran around plenty, but had no shots and made very little impact. JP looks the best of the bunch at the moment, whilst Ruairi needs a goal! And what of super-sub Rory Fallon. He came on and won a few headers on Saturday; and it wouldn’t surprise me if a Fallon-JP combo is given a chance at some stage….you have been warned!
4 – Podcasts
I have given a listen to the new ‘Talking Torquay’ (no relation to Torquay Talk) podcast last night and very much enjoyed it. Stephen and Ryan are new to the world of podcasts, but filled the half an hour with plenty of topics plus a guest appearance from Highway to Hele Editor Rob.
Being two young guys I had been worried about debates over Love Island and Game of Thrones being discussed alongside Nicho et al! However it is very professional and very ‘Torquay United’ – if you get a chance give it a listen.
5 – TUFC Travel Club
I travelled up with the Travel Club on Tuesday night. Always well organised, the guys do an excellent job and there’s always plenty of banter flying around. If you intend on going to away games this season and haven’t used them before, I’d suggest giving the boys a chance. Admittedly we were a bit sombre heading back home the other night, but that is the chance you take! With any luck they’ll be more prosperous trips around the corner…
